Rating

  • Durability (9/10):
Redwood is highly resistant to rot, decay, and insects, which gives it a long lifespan, especially for outdoor use. It's one of the most durable woods available for fencing and decking. The main downside is that it can still be susceptible to scratches and dents due to its relative softness compared to hardwoods.

  • Aesthetics (9/10):
Redwood has a stunning natural color that ranges from rich reddish-brown to dark hues, making it very visually appealing. Over time, it weathers to a silvery-gray patina if left untreated, which many people find desirable. It’s an elegant, high-quality wood with a unique appeal.

  • Cost (6/10):
Redwood is relatively expensive compared to other softwoods like pine or spruce. The cost can be a significant factor, especially for large projects, though the longevity and aesthetic value may justify the higher price for many.

  • Maintenance (7/10):
While redwood requires less maintenance than some other woods, it does need occasional sealing to preserve its rich color and protect it from the elements. Without proper care, it may fade and develop weather stains. But, when treated correctly, it’s relatively low-maintenance.
